Subtraction Tricks: Borrow Less, Think More

Subtraction feels slow when you try to do it like on paper.

Instead, convert it into distance between numbers. Example: 83 − 58. From 58 to 60 is +2, to 80 is +20, to 83 is +3. Total: 25.

This method works great for numbers near a round target (10/50/100).

In CalcSprint, use it when you catch yourself “borrowing” mentally.

• Use “count up” for close numbers
• Aim for a round checkpoint (60, 100, 200)
• Say the steps quietly: +2, +20, +3
