Two-Step Problems: How to Keep the First Result in Your Head
Two-step arithmetic is mostly attention control.
Do the first operation and “label” the result mentally (say it silently once), then do the second.
Example: 37 + 18 − 9. First: 37 + 18 = 55. Hold “55”. Then 55 − 9 = 46.
If you lose track, slow down and reduce your speed target—accuracy first, then speed.
- Say the intermediate result once
- Avoid rushing the second step
- If error rate rises, drop a level for 60 seconds
